A Selfie That Matters

Family relations are like brushing your teeth, if you don't do it regularly. It forms layers, then it starts to stink and eventually it decays.
Me and my cousin's realized it couple of years back. My maternal grandmother is 90 something ( nobody knows her birthdate) but then we all felt come together and re-live our childhood with her.
This picture has been taken in Lonavala last year, when mother's 5 sisters and only brother came together with their families. Needless to say we had wonderful time and this pic still gives us goosebumps.
While making entry for best selfie ( http://mobiistar.in/and Mobiistar on Flipkart.) I couldn't think of any better capture than this. In a time, when relatives are limited to whatsapp groups, we came together!!!!

A movie that Ttok

2017 has been a disappointing year for moviegoers. Except the grandeur of ‘Bahubali 2’, claustrophobia of ‘Trapped’ and small town charm of ‘Bareli Ki Barfi’ there is hardly anything to talk about. Apparently ‘Judwa 2’ is the highest grosser Hindi Movie so far, so that sums up 2017. And that has been pretty much case with Marathi Movies as well. And then we watched ‘Faster Fene’ last week. Faster Fene (aka FaFe) brought the fun back to cinema halls.

For Marathi Mulga like me, Pro. B. R. Bhagwat’s Faster Fene books were usual picks at local library. Bhagawat gave Marathi literature it’s very own Tom Sawyer and we kids (back then) nourished on that for long. In late 80’s Doordarshan created Teleseries with same name that brought us Sumeet Raghavan in title role. Now, Faster Fene that has been read and seen in so many versions, we were curious to know what Director ‘Aditya Sarpotdar’ and writer ‘Kshitij Patwardhan’ has new to offer.

Something that Dibankar Banerjee failed miserably with ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’, Aditya Sarpotdar achieves exactly that. Faster Fene is older now, he is about to appear for Medical Entrance exam, has smart phone, and smarter thinking and relevant to today's time. Within first few minutes of movie sets his wit and quirk and brings all the characters to amply support him.

Movie adapts very little from original books but then director puts its creator (B R Bhagwat played brilliantly by Dilip Prabhawalkar) right in middle of the scene. And we have strong antagonist Appa played cringe-worthily by Girish Kulkarni. The interval scene sets for big face-off between FaFe and Appa and thankfully the curse of second half do not affect the movie.

In terms of acting, movie takes brilliant actors even in small roles, be it Sidharth Jadhav or Poornima Bhave or Chinmayee Sumit (who played FaFe's mom in movie and  wife of Sumit Raghavan in real). It borrows couple of mannerisms from Nawazuddin of movie 'Kick'. Appa's laugh and FaFe's Ttok but both works cause it's done smartly. The technical department is top notch with special mention of Troy-Arif's haunting background score. Faster Fene gives us a hero without songs, no romance and who is just amongst us. Now that's what I call coming of age cinema.

Woh Saat Saal

Yeh Satwa saal hain, aur abbhi wohi haal hain.
Na jaane kitni mombattiyan jalee, NEWS channel walon ko TRP mili
Baaten toh bahut hue, Shahido ko shradhanjali mili
Par uske baad kya?
Yeh Satwa saaal hain, aur abbhi wohi haal hain.

Aaj bhi Gateway pe khule aam ghum sakta he koi bhi
CST station pe mere pados mein baitha koi aatankwadi to nahi?
Shaq aur asuraksha badhti ja rahi
Kya uska koi ilaaj hain?
Yeh Satwa saaal hain, aur abbhi wohi haal hain.

Yeh koi pehli baar nahi tha,
Yeh kuchh aakhri bar nahi hain,
Aaj bhi jab dekhta hu, police ki jang lagi hue bandooke
Sochta hu, kya yeh bacha payenge apne aap ko AK-47 se?
Yeh Satwa saaal hain, aur abbhi wohi haal hain.

Janta hu ek din mein kuchh nahi badlata,
pechida hain mamla, etni jaldi hal nahi milta
Waade to bade bade kiye, batein bhi bahut sari hue
Par kya koshishe kaafi hain?
Itminan hain?
Har saal 26/11 ko yahi sawal hain
Yeh Satwa saaal hain, aur abbhi wohi haal hain.

Honorable Man

I watch Grey's anatomy...Yes I Do...
In its otherwise emotionally overloaded drama I found an absolutely striking line about honorable man.

“Do you know when to walk away? Do you know when not to take less than you deserve, if you do, then you’re an honorable man.”

Sawan Mein Lag Gayee Aag

Back in 1998, when we first heard Mika in Sawan Mein Lag Gayee Aag,

That screechy voice made us cringe, 14 years later I hardly find any movie without his song.

Nilu left

I have great affinity towards personal blogs, its fun to read about the people whom you never met, haven't seen and do not bother much...I found Nilu's life few days back http://nilufamily.blogspot.in/ and within first few lines I just loved the way she writes....she is unbelievably candid in her posts, rants a lot and most of the things she writes makes absolute sense. The post I liked most was about a heartbreak http://nilufamily.blogspot.in/2011/11/on-heartbreak.html I found it so true! and much helping :)
She left blogging yesterday, I do not know why and do not know for how long....Sue did something similar here http://adamdiaries.blogspot.in/2011/09/thats-it-for-now-it-has-taken-while_07.html?zx=8279a97dc6209e79 and thankfully he came back in 3 months.

Hope to see Nilu again...really soon...

Rendezvous with Ishwar

Here is the situation, you have bus to catch for Hyderabad at 11:30 PM, you start well before time from Baner, Pune…because after all it’s Pune and everything sucks there.
I got an auto at 10:00 PM who agreed to come by meter (yes, you read it right!)

How little you are interested to hear about auto driver’s family when there is 8 degrees outside and sleep is just rolling over your eyes after a handsome dinner? He started rambling about it,  I kept nodding for a while and then stopped to do that, but the auto driver did not give up.

He kept on telling me about his father (who as per him, could tell the future, someone who is blessed with Brahmagyan), his brother who was in army and about his own dreams to become army man. I don’t know when but I did start listening to him and out of no-where he started to talk in English. It’s been after ages I was listening to pure English without any fake accent.

That Auto driver slowly took a track of Bhagvadgeeta, Krishna and an importance of guru in one’s life. I learnt that somehow he could not fulfill his dreams, something that his father already knew but did not tell him that.

It took me 40 minutes to reach Pune station and I still had almost 50 minutes in hand to catch my bus. He stopped the auto, charged me exactly what meter showed [not even late night half return charges] and then asked me if I got any time.
I said “Yes” J

He asked me to read Bhagvadgeeta. The next thing I thought that he might take out one copy to sell it to me, but he did not do that, for next 20-30 minutes he told me why I should read it. Strangely enough I did agree to most of his points. I have promised him that it would be my New Year resolution J

While leaving, we shook hands and I asked his name. He said: “Ishwar Patil”
The name was as striking as his speech and personality. Tomorrow I am buying my copy of ‘Bhagvadgeeta as it is’ and hoping it wont be as my any other New Year resolutions.

DRAFTS 2011 - DEOOL leaves you speechless at times

As a kid I used to go to a small Ganpati temple near Kurla Station with my sister, Then it was called simply Ganesh Mandir. The temple was very unnoticed and otherwise quite humble affair. Few months later they renamed it to 'JAGRUT VINAYAK MANDIR' and This turned fortune of the temple by 180 degrees. Now there are long queues in front of that temple. May be I was too young to understand the power of word JAGRUT that time. If you look at some of the temples and how it has changed over the years you would know what Deool wants to convey to us.

DEOOL is one of those movies which makes me proud to say that how marathi cinema has matured over the years

DRAFTS 2011 - NO TAACHING NO KISHEENG

The outrageous awesomeness called Himesh Reshamiya, making me to write one more post dedicated to him and his new song. "No Touching No Kissing " ....sums up story of my life :)

DRAFTS 2011 - must listen of 2011

It's good start a year with clean slate, clearing all the 2011 drafts from blogspot....
This, I love to do, Handpicking some of my favorite songs of 2011, and mostly telling why actually liked these songs....

Dilli, absolutely haunting piece by Amit T, liked the rock feel to it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev3QWRbzoPw

Darling, not fully original still Vishal B does the trick with otherwise reliable Rekha Bhardwaj and nice to see Usha Uthup there
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMiKYLLW8hI

Yunhi, Its sheer magic of Mohit Chauhan along with some hopeless romanticism in lyrics
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrL605XlK70

Khoya Khoya Chand, my personal favorite, the song comes so unexpectedly to you. Some might say a bit out of sych but pircturized wonderfully
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfgxuZmNaC8

Ooh lala - So cheesy yet sexy...I just loved OOH Lala
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yg-qlKb4X7U

Nadan Parinday Rehman does the trick again, the song has a graph in itself, true magic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttIKsnxPrMY

Saibo who would have thot that some movie named 'Shor in the city' will give us such a sweet song, Saibo is my personal romantic favorite of this year
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnaYB3h75Uc

2011 DRAFTS - Roxtar

It's good start a year with clean slate, clearing all the 2011 drafts from blogspot.....
Watched Rockstar and had mixed views about it....here is what I feel about it...

There are 3 things for which you should watch Roxstar

1. Mohit Chauhan - Mohit Chauhan shimmers and adds soul to 'Jordan'. For me he was biggest take away from the movie.
2. Ranbir Kapoor - The boy wonder of Bollywood, he never dispoints, and shines bright and high even this time. There isn't a single frame without him and he carries movie on his shoulder square and fair.
3. A. R. Rehman - When he is not at his best, still he is far better than others, Rehman gives what needs from him, but then again not at his best. Faya Kun and Nadaan Parinday are my favoirte

There are 3 things for which you should NOT watch Roxstar

1. Nargis Fakhri - Heer could have been next Geet (Jab we met), but Nargis Fakhri kills the charm of Heer Kaul mercillessly. She cant act, (can she be the next Katrina Kaif) and even just watching her on screen sometimes get really irritating
2. Imtiaz Ali - He often shares STORY credits for his movies and does creditable job. This time however he dispoints big time in second half. Mr. Ali ran out of ideas towards the end and this litterally stops the movie.
3. A. R. Rehman - Because we always expect more from Rehman and Tendulkar. Certainly not at his best.

Bench Chhod

I didn't know how much I care for you, till you came in my life, and now you are going away, I am surely going to miss you.
They say, 'On bench' in an inevitable phase in any IT professional's life but somehow it was eluding me all this while. After a long wait of more than 6 years, you came to my life...and I enjoyed every bit of it.
The feeling of waking up in the morning without knowing what to do and where to sit is amazing. After dodging weird looks that freshers often gave me when they find a senior guy next to them browsing on a common system is interesting. And the only concern for me to fill those 9.5 hours per day.....Oh man! trully a honeymoon period.

But from Monday, that will not be the case, until we meet again....I will miss you

I am reading right now! 'FISH MARKET'

Fish! By Stephen Lundin - Review taken from Internet
FISH is a book that can provide a solution. It tells us how to enjoy the work we do, even if we do not have a choice about what we are doing.
I read somewhere that

‘Doing what you like is freedom
Liking what you do is happiness´.

This book emphasizes the second part of the quote and explains how to derive ultimate happiness from whatever work we do. Often we do not have the complete freedom of choosing the work we really desire, due to the environment we are in or due to family circumstances. However, we always have a choice in the way we work and that is what makes the difference.

Very rarely do we get to see management books which drive the point home in an engrossing way and FISH is one of those. It is about an unenthusiastic, irresponsible team in a company referred to as toxic energy dump´ by other teams and how it gets transformed into a fun-filled, lively one, implementing the techniques adopted from a fish market. Irrespective of the mundane work in the fish market, the workers in the market are cheerful, playful and enjoy their work. What is the secret of their happiness and how does the team adopt their principles is the story.

This book explains all the principles in an interesting manner, supported by inspiring quotations and lists out the key points wherever required.

4 vital points discussed in the book are-choosing the attitude, creating a playful atmosphere at work, giving preference to the customers and always focusing on the present without worrying about the future.

Choosing the right attitude forms the basis of all these. Either we can choose to be an ordinary person or a world famous person. It is up to us. The Big Idea

WORK MADE FUN GETS DONE!

In a reality where you may be working at a job that is not exactly ideal, here are ways to learn to love what you do, and make your workplace an energetic, enthusiastic and wonderful place to be. Through the delightful story of fictional characters Mary Jane Ramirez, a manager from First Guarantee Financial, and Lonnie, a fishmonger from Seattle’s world famous Pike Place Fish Market, this engaging parable teaches us how to transform a toxic energy dump´ (every company has one) into a workplace that adds value, productivity and profit to the company, thereby creating happier workers, employers, and customers!

Choose your attitude.

There is always a choice about the way you do your work, even if there is no choice about the work itself.

Mary Jane and Dan had moved their family to Seattle, and had only spent less than a year in their new hometown when tragedy struck. Dan died suddenly from a burst aneurysm, forcing Mary Jane to accept a position on the dreaded third floor of First Guarantee Financial because of the salary raise and benefits it would provide her, as she was now a single parent.

The challenge was to transform the company’s toxic energy dump, a.k.a. the third floor department, into a staff that the rest of the company could work with effectively. The third floor was the butt of all company jokes, where phone calls would go unanswered, and people could be counted on to rush to the elevators at 4.30 everyday.

Pondering over the problem of the third floor, Mary Jane stumbled upon the Pike Place Fish Market one day during lunch. She immediately noticed the energy, enthusiasm, and interaction the market fishmongers and customers had. She made friends with Lonnie, who promised to help teach her staff the secrets of the success of the Fish market.

The first lesson: There is always a choice about the way you do your work, even if there is no choice about the work itself. We can choose the attitude we bring to our work.

Wisdom in a nutshell from the Pike Place Fish Market:

Have the courage to change.
Never fear the risk of failure. The risk of doing nothing is greater than the risk of acting.
Each of us is an artist. Everyday we have a choice to create each day like a work of art. The reason you were born was to leave your own indelible mark on the world. Respect your creative urges. Have faith in yourself. Your choices are as authentic as you are.
Never stop learning and growing.
You have within yourself more resources of energy, talent, and strength than you think.
Concrete steps to take: Call a meeting and speak from the heart, find a message that communicates choosing your attitude in a way that everyone will understand and personalize. Provide motivation, and persist with faith.

LIFE IS TOO PRECIOUS TO BE PASSING THROUGH TO RETIREMENT.

At the Pike Place Fish Market, a character named Wolf was the best example of choosing your attitude. He was once on the road to a career as a professional racecar driver when he had a serious accident. He wallowed in self-pity for a while, but when his girlfriend left him and friends stopped calling, he realized he had an important choice to make. He could choose to live fully, or he could let life slip away in a series of missed opportunities. Wolf’s story shows us how we can choose our attitude everyday and choose it well.

Play!

Create an adult playground and have fun. You can be serious about your work without taking yourself too seriously.

Mary Jane learned this important ingredient when she brought her two kids to the Pike market. In Lonnie’s words, here is the essence of the idea: ´This is a real business which is run to make a profit. This business pays a lot of salaries, and we take the business seriously, but we discovered we could be serious about business and still have fun with the way we conducted business. We sell a lot of fish. We have low turnover. We enjoy work that can be very tedious. We have become great friends, like the players on a winning team. We have a lot of pride in what we do and the way we do it. And we have become world famous.´ someone’s day.

Create great memories. The playful way we do our work allows us to find creative ways to engage our customers. Find ways to respectfully include them in the fun.
Mary Jane observed this in the way customers had fun catching fish thrown by the fishmongers, in the way her son Brad was allowed to help out in the fish storage, doing big guy’stuff. Customers like being part of the show.
Be present.

Focus on the customer in front of you and be tuned in to opportunities to be there for people. This helps in your personal life too!

How many times have you been kept waiting at a store counter for someone to attend to you, while the clerk finished his phone call or conversation with another salesperson?

Being present for your customers says it all.
Be alert. Pay attention. Stop daydreaming on the job.
In your family life, how many times have you passed up an opportunity to take your daughter to the park because you were too busy?

Mary Jane realized it wouldn’t work to simply tell her staff about the Pike market, they had to see it for themselves.

FIND WAYS TO LET YOUR STAFF DISCOVER THE FISH PHILOSOPHY FOR THEMSELVES.

After a field trip to the market at lunch, the staff was assigned to think about the four key ingredients she outlined. How would they translate it to their third floor department?

How could they create more fun and energy? How could they engage customers in ways that make their day?

What can the fishmongers teach us about being present for each other and our customers?

THINGS WON’T GET BETTER UNTIL WE CHOOSE TO MAKE THINGS BETTER.

The third floor then flew into action. Four teams would make presentations on each of the key ingredients. Each presentation was to have action items for implementation, and teams would be responsible for setting and facilitating their own meetings

I am reading right now! "BUILDING YOUR SELF-ESTEEM"

Crises of self-esteem are a part of the human experience. When you feel troubled by low self-esteem, review the suggestions below and choose those that are relevant to your situation and work on them.

1. Free yourself from " shoulds". Live your life on the basis of what is possible for you and what feels right to you instead of what you or others think you "should" do. " Shoulds" distract us from identifying and fulfilling our own needs, abilities, interests and personal goals. Find out what you want and what you are good at, value those, and take actions designed to fulfill your potential.

2. Respect your own needs. Recognize and take care of your own needs and wants first. Identify what really fulfills you — not just immediate gratifications. Respecting your deeper needs will increase your sense of worth and well-being.

3. Set achievable goals. Establish goals on the basis of what you can realistically achieve, and then work step-by-step to develop your potential. To strive always for perfectionist, absolute goals — for example, "Anything less than an A in school is always unacceptable" — invites stress and failure.

4. Talk to yourself positively. Stop listening to your "cruel inner critic." When you notice that you are doubting or judging yourself, replace such thoughts with self-accepting thoughts, balanced self-assessment and self-supportive direction.

5. Test your reality. Separate your emotional reactions — your fears and bad feelings — from the reality of your current situation. For example, you may feel stupid, anxious and hopeless about a project, but if you think about it, you may still have the ability and opportunity to accomplish something in it.

6. Experience success. Seek out and put yourself in situations in which the probability of success is high. Look for projects which stretch — but don't overwhelm — your abilities. "Image" yourself succeeding. Whatever you accomplish, let yourself acknowledge and experience success and good feelings about it.

7. Take chances. New experiences are learning experiences which can build self-confidence. Expect to make mistakes as part of the process; don't be disappointed if you don't do it perfectly. Feel good about trying something new, making progress and increasing your competence.

8. Solve problems. Don't avoid problems, and don't moil about them. Face them, and identify ways to solve them or cope with them. If you run away from problems you can solve, you threaten your self-confidence.

9. Make decisions. Practice making and implementing positive decisions flexibly but firmly, and trust yourself to deal with the consequences. When you assert yourself, you enhance your sense of yourself, learn more, and increase your self-confidence.

10. Develop your skills. Know what you can and can't do. Assess the skills you need; learn and practice those.

11. Emphasize your strengths. Focus on what you can do rather than what you cannot. Accept current limitations and live comfortably within them, even as you consider what strengths you might want or need to develop next.

12. Rely on your own opinion of yourself. Entertain feedback from others, but don't rely on their opinions. Depend on your own values in making decisions and deciding how you feel about yourself and what is right for you to do.
