Nilu left

I have great affinity towards personal blogs, its fun to read about the people whom you never met, haven't seen and do not bother much...I found Nilu's life few days back http://nilufamily.blogspot.in/ and within first few lines I just loved the way she writes....she is unbelievably candid in her posts, rants a lot and most of the things she writes makes absolute sense. The post I liked most was about a heartbreak http://nilufamily.blogspot.in/2011/11/on-heartbreak.html I found it so true! and much helping :)
She left blogging yesterday, I do not know why and do not know for how long....Sue did something similar here http://adamdiaries.blogspot.in/2011/09/thats-it-for-now-it-has-taken-while_07.html?zx=8279a97dc6209e79 and thankfully he came back in 3 months.

Hope to see Nilu again...really soon...

Rendezvous with Ishwar

Here is the situation, you have bus to catch for Hyderabad at 11:30 PM, you start well before time from Baner, Pune…because after all it’s Pune and everything sucks there.
I got an auto at 10:00 PM who agreed to come by meter (yes, you read it right!)

How little you are interested to hear about auto driver’s family when there is 8 degrees outside and sleep is just rolling over your eyes after a handsome dinner? He started rambling about it,  I kept nodding for a while and then stopped to do that, but the auto driver did not give up.

He kept on telling me about his father (who as per him, could tell the future, someone who is blessed with Brahmagyan), his brother who was in army and about his own dreams to become army man. I don’t know when but I did start listening to him and out of no-where he started to talk in English. It’s been after ages I was listening to pure English without any fake accent.

That Auto driver slowly took a track of Bhagvadgeeta, Krishna and an importance of guru in one’s life. I learnt that somehow he could not fulfill his dreams, something that his father already knew but did not tell him that.

It took me 40 minutes to reach Pune station and I still had almost 50 minutes in hand to catch my bus. He stopped the auto, charged me exactly what meter showed [not even late night half return charges] and then asked me if I got any time.
I said “Yes” J

He asked me to read Bhagvadgeeta. The next thing I thought that he might take out one copy to sell it to me, but he did not do that, for next 20-30 minutes he told me why I should read it. Strangely enough I did agree to most of his points. I have promised him that it would be my New Year resolution J

While leaving, we shook hands and I asked his name. He said: “Ishwar Patil”
The name was as striking as his speech and personality. Tomorrow I am buying my copy of ‘Bhagvadgeeta as it is’ and hoping it wont be as my any other New Year resolutions.

I am reading right now! 'FISH MARKET'

Fish! By Stephen Lundin - Review taken from Internet
FISH is a book that can provide a solution. It tells us how to enjoy the work we do, even if we do not have a choice about what we are doing.
I read somewhere that

‘Doing what you like is freedom
Liking what you do is happiness´.

This book emphasizes the second part of the quote and explains how to derive ultimate happiness from whatever work we do. Often we do not have the complete freedom of choosing the work we really desire, due to the environment we are in or due to family circumstances. However, we always have a choice in the way we work and that is what makes the difference.

Very rarely do we get to see management books which drive the point home in an engrossing way and FISH is one of those. It is about an unenthusiastic, irresponsible team in a company referred to as toxic energy dump´ by other teams and how it gets transformed into a fun-filled, lively one, implementing the techniques adopted from a fish market. Irrespective of the mundane work in the fish market, the workers in the market are cheerful, playful and enjoy their work. What is the secret of their happiness and how does the team adopt their principles is the story.

This book explains all the principles in an interesting manner, supported by inspiring quotations and lists out the key points wherever required.

4 vital points discussed in the book are-choosing the attitude, creating a playful atmosphere at work, giving preference to the customers and always focusing on the present without worrying about the future.

Choosing the right attitude forms the basis of all these. Either we can choose to be an ordinary person or a world famous person. It is up to us. The Big Idea

WORK MADE FUN GETS DONE!

In a reality where you may be working at a job that is not exactly ideal, here are ways to learn to love what you do, and make your workplace an energetic, enthusiastic and wonderful place to be. Through the delightful story of fictional characters Mary Jane Ramirez, a manager from First Guarantee Financial, and Lonnie, a fishmonger from Seattle’s world famous Pike Place Fish Market, this engaging parable teaches us how to transform a toxic energy dump´ (every company has one) into a workplace that adds value, productivity and profit to the company, thereby creating happier workers, employers, and customers!

Choose your attitude.

There is always a choice about the way you do your work, even if there is no choice about the work itself.

Mary Jane and Dan had moved their family to Seattle, and had only spent less than a year in their new hometown when tragedy struck. Dan died suddenly from a burst aneurysm, forcing Mary Jane to accept a position on the dreaded third floor of First Guarantee Financial because of the salary raise and benefits it would provide her, as she was now a single parent.

The challenge was to transform the company’s toxic energy dump, a.k.a. the third floor department, into a staff that the rest of the company could work with effectively. The third floor was the butt of all company jokes, where phone calls would go unanswered, and people could be counted on to rush to the elevators at 4.30 everyday.

Pondering over the problem of the third floor, Mary Jane stumbled upon the Pike Place Fish Market one day during lunch. She immediately noticed the energy, enthusiasm, and interaction the market fishmongers and customers had. She made friends with Lonnie, who promised to help teach her staff the secrets of the success of the Fish market.

The first lesson: There is always a choice about the way you do your work, even if there is no choice about the work itself. We can choose the attitude we bring to our work.

Wisdom in a nutshell from the Pike Place Fish Market:

Have the courage to change.
Never fear the risk of failure. The risk of doing nothing is greater than the risk of acting.
Each of us is an artist. Everyday we have a choice to create each day like a work of art. The reason you were born was to leave your own indelible mark on the world. Respect your creative urges. Have faith in yourself. Your choices are as authentic as you are.
Never stop learning and growing.
You have within yourself more resources of energy, talent, and strength than you think.
Concrete steps to take: Call a meeting and speak from the heart, find a message that communicates choosing your attitude in a way that everyone will understand and personalize. Provide motivation, and persist with faith.

LIFE IS TOO PRECIOUS TO BE PASSING THROUGH TO RETIREMENT.

At the Pike Place Fish Market, a character named Wolf was the best example of choosing your attitude. He was once on the road to a career as a professional racecar driver when he had a serious accident. He wallowed in self-pity for a while, but when his girlfriend left him and friends stopped calling, he realized he had an important choice to make. He could choose to live fully, or he could let life slip away in a series of missed opportunities. Wolf’s story shows us how we can choose our attitude everyday and choose it well.

Play!

Create an adult playground and have fun. You can be serious about your work without taking yourself too seriously.

Mary Jane learned this important ingredient when she brought her two kids to the Pike market. In Lonnie’s words, here is the essence of the idea: ´This is a real business which is run to make a profit. This business pays a lot of salaries, and we take the business seriously, but we discovered we could be serious about business and still have fun with the way we conducted business. We sell a lot of fish. We have low turnover. We enjoy work that can be very tedious. We have become great friends, like the players on a winning team. We have a lot of pride in what we do and the way we do it. And we have become world famous.´ someone’s day.

Create great memories. The playful way we do our work allows us to find creative ways to engage our customers. Find ways to respectfully include them in the fun.
Mary Jane observed this in the way customers had fun catching fish thrown by the fishmongers, in the way her son Brad was allowed to help out in the fish storage, doing big guy’stuff. Customers like being part of the show.
Be present.

Focus on the customer in front of you and be tuned in to opportunities to be there for people. This helps in your personal life too!

How many times have you been kept waiting at a store counter for someone to attend to you, while the clerk finished his phone call or conversation with another salesperson?

Being present for your customers says it all.
Be alert. Pay attention. Stop daydreaming on the job.
In your family life, how many times have you passed up an opportunity to take your daughter to the park because you were too busy?

Mary Jane realized it wouldn’t work to simply tell her staff about the Pike market, they had to see it for themselves.

FIND WAYS TO LET YOUR STAFF DISCOVER THE FISH PHILOSOPHY FOR THEMSELVES.

After a field trip to the market at lunch, the staff was assigned to think about the four key ingredients she outlined. How would they translate it to their third floor department?

How could they create more fun and energy? How could they engage customers in ways that make their day?

What can the fishmongers teach us about being present for each other and our customers?

THINGS WON’T GET BETTER UNTIL WE CHOOSE TO MAKE THINGS BETTER.

The third floor then flew into action. Four teams would make presentations on each of the key ingredients. Each presentation was to have action items for implementation, and teams would be responsible for setting and facilitating their own meetings

Sab suna suna laage

All the blogs I used to follow are in some kind of limbo these days. Even the otherwise reliable Random Thoughts of demented mind posted 3 weeks back. Is it some kind of virus spreading across.

I watched contagion few weeks back, they called blogging , 'graffity with punctuation' I liked it :)
But blogging is fun...even more when someone read it (besides you ofcorse)

So all my fellow bloggers, keep writing...

Initial Thoughts of 2011

"Bathroom mein pani nahi aa raha" [there is no water in bathroom], these were my first few words on 2011 morning, made me realize that no matter how well you plan, things are bound to happen....in other words Shit Happens!!
2011 surely looks promising, and wishing everyone HAPPY NEW YEAR is just too lame.
Re-posting Cyanide and Happiness's that quite sum up my feelings

P.S. Stop thinking about how I managed without water.

2010- Wrap up

Eehhho!! 2010 is almost over, and I am about to finish one of the lamest year I had. India however has grrreat run in almost every department [sarcastic]. Time to wrap up year in my style...co-relating with 2010 Bollywood releases though many of them I am yet to watch.

WE ARE FAMILY - It's all about loving your family, 2010 is a year of scams, starting with IPL and ending note by 2G Raja, This movie however star all the families involved in Adarsh Society Scam and ofcorse Yeduruppa and Sons.

KNOCK-OUT - Can't think of anyone else than Ashok Chavan, Chavan finally have to give away the MAHA CM Lottery that he got twice.

STRIKER - This is solely starred by Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, unexpectedly 2010 turned out amazingest year for Sachin, he scored 200 in ODIs and completed 50 test centuries and continued proving his GOD status in modern day Cricket.

NA GHAR KE GHAT KE - Not sure how many of you heard about this movie, that was based on Bihari couple in Mumbai. However it perfectly suits to Laloo Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, they are neither of Central nor of their own Bihar. Many might not agree but Bihar Election 2010 results is very definitive event of this decade.

BADMAASH COMPANY - Pakistan Cricket Board and Pakistani Cricketers...could not think anyone else apt for this title.
LOVE, SEX and DHOKA - My most favorite movie of the year, but here it stars none other than Baba Nithyanand, As per what I saw on youtube, there was NO LOVE but Sex and Dhoka for sure. Still I feel pity about the baba. They are allowed to have sex but surely not the way he did :P

BAND BAJA BARAAT - Shoeb Malik is married, NO he is single, NO he is divorced, Who is Ayesha, did he actually sold video rights to news channel for their wedding ceremony? Sania - Shoeb's wedding was all about band baja and really low on baraat. Finally they are married and we just dont care.

ATHITI TUM KAB JAYOGE - Much against Indian saying of 'Athithi Devo Bhav', Obama's Indian visit turned out to be pain in an ass. 'US president coming to India to explore more job opportunities for Americans' isn't quite rosy picture for Indians. He came, She Danced and they went back. Screwing perfect festive season for Mumbai and promising absolutely nothing for India.

JHOOTA HI SAHI - Lalit Modi is down but certainly not out. IPL scam took India with storm, thanks to more scams to follow Modi is keeping low pro on this list. Jhoota hi Sahi but Modi is kicking some serious ass in legal battle with BCCI.

KHELEN HUM JEE JAN SE - This goes to all the players of Commonwealth Games, yeah at least they put on a great show without any deadline slips. A must mention are Gagan Narang, Somdev and Saina Nehwal.

WELL DONE ABBA - Believe it, this goes to Dhoni, we stayed as number 1 test team in the world and we played like one. Much credit should goes to Dhoni, but WELL DONE is for overtaking Sachin and everyone else in showbiz in endorsement contracts.

GOLMAL - And all the reality show aired this year continued to fake it. Big Boss became more obscene than ever and Rakhi Ka Insaaf broke all the records of how-low-you-can-get-on-TV

PRINCE - As Wikileaks started leaking the great Indian secrets, our Prince of Congress came up with really revolutionary observations, not only that prince charming could not charm bihari elections but also risking  majority of votes now.

ISHQUIYA- Ohh there are many luv storys around but I HATE LUV STORYS, however I can not miss out Shashi Tharoor and Sunanda Pushkar love story. He gave up his ministry, she gave up her share from Cochi franchisee wah! aisa pyar kaha

CLICK - Heard about the movie?? But this year really belongs to Twitter, to bring down Shashi Tharoor and Lalit Modi. That proves that screwing up someone's career is single click away - POST it.

RIGHT YA WRONG - We waited for the verdict for 18 long years, when it came, the entire nation was stand still. Ayodha Verdict came and made me to realize that nothing has changed, still we get equally panic with just a sight of what could possibly happen again. 1/3rd share to each is possibly the smartest decision but alas we are not matured enough to accept it. I am still confused as rest of the nation.

RED ALERT - Naxalism was at it's pick this year, what was more bewildering was the support it has received from scholars such as Arundhati Roy. By the way those who have missed, Red Alert is good movie, in spite Sunil Shetty and Sameera Reddy being in lead roles.

that bring's to the last release of the year. And the TEES MAAR KHAN goes to nothing but Suresh Kalmadi. Now there is enough has been said about him here and everywhere. So my Indian of the year is Suresh Kalmadi.

And there are some striking images of 2010
What a picture!!! Thankfully we got to see many such pics last year. Sachin completing his double ton and keeping his GODhood kicking.

Michelle Obama Doing Koli Dance - Quite enduring
This shocked the nation, BBC released pics of Commonwealth Games Village, something that brought a national shame. One of the lowpoint of CWG 2010

Pathetic publicity gimmick, I still can not bear a site, Akshay Kumar an apologetically shameless with R K Laxman

This is my personal favorite!! look how happy they are
Mumbai Indians had a great run in IPL 3 and specially Bhajji.

Wish to see many more happy pictures in 2011

Happy New Year

Australia- Down & Under

You wont believe but there is a smile on my face while I am writing this post. I always hated Australian cricket team, more after 2003 world cup finale. They were insanely talented and brutally arrogant about it, something that goes hand in hand.
I still remember, 23 March 2003, a day that was earlier remembered as Shaheed din for Bhagatsingh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, but later in 2003 we have seen massacre of Indian Cricket Team in Johannesburg right in front of our eyes.
We all gathered at Sumit's place so we can enjoy the match together, the first ball by Zaheer went for NO BALL, and things just never came back on track. Its more than a decade that we have seen dominance of Australian Cricket Team in all forms of cricket. We all hate to admit but they were simply great, but the greater part is that...they WERE.
I know there are still 2 matches left in Ashes, and I MIGHT need to eat my own words, but somehow I think that is not going to happen. Australians ruled cricket for a long time [just the way West Indies did ] but now it's beginning of an end. They have been down to 5th rank in test cricket and ODI isn't going perfect as well, but Ashes is something that hurts them most [it has got history] just the way Javed Miandad's last ball six does to us.
I wish Australian Cricket team, more humiliating loses and many such embarrassing moments...Amen!!!!

re-post

"Aho kashala netay tyala shalet? kahi gadbad hou shakte ki" ("Why are you taking him to school? There might be some problem") my neighbour warned my mother as she was taking me to school at around 6:30 in the morning. However there were many speculations going around those days and my mother chose to give a deaf ear to friendly neighborhood's advice.

1992, I was in 4th standard and preparations for scholarship exam were in full swing, but somehow during lunch break we have been told that they are calling off for the day and afternoon batch will not have any classes. Then, I used to live in Kurla, ~70% Muslim populated and supposed to be communal sensitive area. My school was in Sion, and I used to come to school by train, 4th standard kid is too little to travel by his own, specially when the situation is not ideal.

But what was the situation out there? For 9 years old it was a bit more complex to comprehend. School authorities were not allowing kids to travel by their own and hence we have been asked to wait until parents will come to pick us up. The school was 80% empty by 11:00 AM and as time passed the eerie feeling was sulking in, even the empty school ground was not appealing any more, I was waiting there for almost 4 hours now and feeling of hunger was far away. It was 3:00 PM and there were only 4 of us, me, Praful, Trupti and  a peon (we used to call him mama). Trupti's mom came to take her home and as per what she told to mama, things were really bad out there. All I care was to go home. 30 minutes later I saw my both parents. I was happy to see mom there but equally surprised to see my father (isn't he supposed to be in office by now?) They thanked mama for staying with us and took me and Praful to nearest restaurantGurukripa. The owner was about to close for the day at 3:45, but when he saw 2 kinds he allowed us to get in and we had some food. Soon Praful's dad came in and took him.
"What's the matter, what took you so long?" the obvious question from me to parents.
"There are no trains and we came walking till here" mom replied,
"So how would we get back to home?" I asked again.
"We will get to the Sion station and see how the things are" as baba replied, we have started walking towards station.
There was a huge crowd waiting at Sion station, railway announced one special train to Kalyan, may this was our only chance to get in train and reach home as soon as we can. We were desperate, so as every other person on that station. Somehow we could catch that train and reached home. There were policemen all over the place making even the daily route look so unfamiliar. There was a mosque almost 50 meter away from my home, and you could see it from window, as soon as we entered the home, my mom closed the window and said this will remain close for few days at least. Perhaps the first sign of fear coming to home. As I was at home my parents were still worried about both of my sisters who were still in college. One in Vidyavihar- a nearby suburb to Kurla and another at Mahim - an equally sensitive area. It took us 5:00 to reach home, an hour later my elder sister returned home. and by 6:30 we got a call that my second sister has reached safely at my aunt's place in Vile-Parle.

I have been told that my school will be closed for some days now. "Wow!!!"  that was my first reaction. Ignorance is bliss...very true. Someone called us, saying get to the terrace there is one jewellery shop has been set on fire. Of course I have been asked to stay at home only. But no complains....no school for few days, I was really happy. I went to the sleep without worrying that I need to get up early for school tomorrow.

This post is not to open any debate or make any stand. It's neither to support or oppose what happened on and after 6th December.....it's just to tell what happened on 6th December from a 9 year old's point of view. But almost 18 years later I still do not know what we got out of it. Some might say it's Hindu's revenge, some might say a payback or some might call it an action better late than never. It's still hard to comprehend for me what all this worth for? Perhaps only raam jane (God Ram only knows)
